Season 2 is the second season of Falling Skies. Falling Skies was renewed for a second season on July 7, 2011.

It debuted in the summer of 2012. The Season 2 premiere kicked off with a 2 hour premiere on June 17, 2012. TNT broadcast the second season on Sundays at 9:00 pm in the United States.

The second season on DVD and Blu-ray was released on June 4th, 2013 in the U.S. and Canada and June 8th in Europe.[1]

Summary[]

The season's plot focuses on the 2nd Massachusetts' discovery that a large community of survivors has formed in Charleston, their journey there, and their reception once they arrive. It focuses on the discovery that the Skitters are themselves "harnessed" and mind-controlled by the invaders, but that some of them are resistant to the effects and are rebelling against their Overlords.

Three months have passed since Tom Mason boarded the spacecraft, and the 2nd Mass has been on the move. Assuming their father was dead, Tom's eldest son, Hal, becomes more of a presence in the 2nd Mass, along with Ben, whose hatred of the Skitters grows stronger. While attempting to kill a Skitter, Ben accidentally shoots his father, severely wounding him. Through flashbacks, "Worlds Apart" details Tom's torture by the Overlords and his pilgrimage back to the 2nd Mass.

Tom is still haunted by memories of his time with the aliens and begins to wonder if they did something to his mind. Pope, who is in charge of questioning Tom, plants seeds of doubt about him among the group. Meanwhile, Ben’s hatred for skitters grows, and the 2nd Mass scouts locate an old bridge that will help them cross the river to safety ahead of an impending attack.

The 2nd Mass moves into an airport hanger, but the drafty conditions cause Anne to grow concerned about the group's health. Meanwhile, the Berserkers hatch a plan to get rid of Tom. While dealing with the loss of one of their own, the 2nd Mass receives a promise of hope from a visitor travelling by plane.

The 2nd Mass discover the existence of a resistance among the skitters when they stumble across a battlefield with no human's involved. The rebel faction is lead by Red Eye and has been disrupting the Overlords plans. Ben has been aiding the rebels and Tom is angry at his son for keeping their communication secret. Tom meets with Red Eye and they form a cautious alliance.

Karen Nadler returns to the 2nd Mass as they take shelter in a hospital. She poses as a miraculously released innocent but actually infiltrates the group and convinces Ben to flee with her, injuring Maggie in the process. Tom temporarily takes charge of the 2nd Mass when Captain Weaver is disabled by a serious infection. Pope is discovered wounded in the field and returned to the group. He warns Tom about the manipulative Karen but is too late to disrupt her escape.

The 2nd Mass attempt to escape the hospital when it is besieged by the alien invaders. Captain Weaver resumes control. The aliens deploy a new weapon crawlies but the 2nd Mass gain the upper hand by capturing an Overlord. They use the advantage to negotiate for safe passage.

A group of renegade skitters approaches Charleston to present a unique option to hurt the enemy by assassinating the overlord. In the end it is up to the 2nd Mass to use it, after the Charleston military betrays them. The overlord dies but Karen escapes after infecting Hal. Tom finds out Anne is pregnant with his child. The episode ends with the arrival of a mysterious new race of aliens.

TNT announced production had begun on the second season on October 24, 2011.[2]

Filming took place in Vancouver and at the Riverview Hospital in Coquitlam, British Columbia from October 2011 to March 2012.

A new crew came in for the second season, with only "two or three people on staff that were there in season one." The new staff includes a new writing staff and showrunner, Remi Aubuchon.[3]

October 2011, Brandon Jay McLaren was cast to play Sunil Chutani, however the name was changed to Jamil Dexter.[4]

February 2012, Terry O'Quinn was cast to play Arthur Manchester, former history professor who mentored Tom. [5]

Filming took place in Vancouver and at the Riverview Hospital in Coquitlam from October 2011 to March 2012.[6]

Chris Faloona, who was the Director of Photography in the first season, was unable to return due to commitments on another series, and Nate Goodman was hired.

The idea for the second season was to "create a mobile refugee camp made up of vehicles and rag-tag tents."

Connor Jessup had to hire a trainer as he was going to involved in huge action scenes.[7]

The Battle of Fitchburg digital comics were launched on April 18, 2012; Bridging the gap between seasons, picking up where the first season left off.
