I have a few thoughts on Season 2, Episode 7 "Molon Labe" coming up. I quite enjoyed this episode. It is keeping a fast pace through the second season and built well on the reintroduction of Karen Nadler in the preceding episode "Homecoming".
There were some neat action set pieces, notably the firefight in the woods at the opening and Tom battling the mech in the basement. There was also an increased horror aspect to the episode from the Crawlies, particularly their hatching method and the gruesome demise of Jamil. I was less convinced by the effects used for Dr. Glass's flamethrower but the show continues to look pretty good for a television budget.
I really enjoyed the scene between Tom and the Overlord, and the chance for some insight into the Overlord's agenda for earth. It must be a fun challenge for Connor Jessup to alternate between playing Ben and the voice of the Overlord and Noah Wyle acted the hell out of the scene. It was also good to see the gaps in the plotting of the Overlord reinforced in the subsequent scene between Hal and Karen. Writers Bradley Thompson & David Weddle did a good job scripting these verbal sparring matches and I thought the scenes recalled some of the heady mix of character drama and philosophy you sometimes got from their work on Battlestar Galactica.
I think that Jamil's death was predictable but appreciate that the episode gave it some weight for Lourdes' story. I am also not surprised that we are thinning the ranks of the Berserkers already with the death of Boon (after Lost it is an ill omened character name, right?). I am pleased that Tector is getting a fair amount of characterization though and Ryan Robbins is doing some good work in the supporting role, he is another Battlestar alum having had the recurring role of Charlie Connor on that show. I can't help but wonder if Peter Shinkoda is getting jealous though; Dai hasn't had much to do since shooting down the drone in "Shall We Gather at the River".
I'm looking forward to the 2nd Mass progressing towards Charleston and their continued links with the Skitter resistance as the season progresses. What did everyone else think of the episode?
